Taehee's mother became famous before she had him, therefore in her career she's known by her maiden name. Now of course they all share his father's family name, Moon. And family names in Korea tend to come from a small pool so it's not like if his surname had been the same as her that it would've been obvious they were related anyway!
Her sudden pregnancy was a bit of a big deal at the time, because she'd hit a high in her career and all of a sudden was claiming she would be retiring forever! And she did disappear and live a quiet life after that, and Taehee wasn't thrust into the public eye as a child.
Maybe blood will out though, because he was drawn to perform even as a small child. He has a scar on his left elbow where he fell offstage once as a toddler, but that didn't stop him at all!
Taehee's fellow trainees would know his mother's *name*, but it's their parents generation who would really be struck by Shin Eun-Seo's legacy, her music. Taehee is convinced anyone of that generation who discovers who he is will resent the hell out of him for being the reason she never brought out a third album or continued her career.
He's turned all of those fears inwards on himself, and even though he's always wanted to perform anyway, he has added a mountain of extra pressure onto himself by thinking he somehow needs to atone for all those people let down by his mother's retirement from the music industry.
The trainees would probably know OF her - like any of us probably grew up on our parent's music! - but just as a singer from the past, not in a way that impacts on their lives like it did for their parents. So they will know who she was by reputation.
It'd probably be like, "oh wow my parents love her music, she was really big a few decades ago huh!"
But yeah it's not his fault his mother chose family life over stardom! He certainly never asked her to! And I think she's always tried to tell him so; he has loving parents! But he's also grown up knowing the impact it had when she quit XD;;
